BLE-Based Access Control System for Construction Sites

Overview

Designed specifically for the challenging environments of construction sites, the BLE-based access control system offers long-range, reliable access management for both indoor and outdoor areas. The system consists of BLE gateways placed at key access points and rugged BLE beacons deployed on equipment and vehicles. With extended range and power-efficient operation, this system outperforms RFID in managing access across large construction sites with minimal maintenance.

Features

  • Adjustable system range: Covers up to 900 ft (300 meters) indoors and up to 5,000 ft (1,500 meters) outdoors.
  • Extended battery life: BLE beacons last up to 10 years, reducing operational costs.
  • Multiple power options: BLE gateways can be powered by PoE, batteries, solar power, or standard power outlets, while beacons can be powered by batteries or solar power.
  • Rugged beacons: IP67-rated beacons are built to withstand the harsh outdoor conditions commonly found on construction sites.
  • Scalability: The system can be expanded with additional gateways and beacons to accommodate the changing needs of large construction sites.

Technical Specifications

  • System range: Adjustable, up to 900 ft (300 meters) indoors, and up to 5,000 ft (1,500 meters) outdoors.
  • Beacon battery life: Up to 10 years, ensuring long-term operation with minimal replacement.
  • Power options:
    • Gateways: PoE, battery, solar power, or traditional power outlets.
    • Beacons: Battery or solar power.
  • Durability: Beacons are IP67-rated, providing protection against dust, water, and other elements encountered on construction sites.
  • Gateway placement: BLE gateways should be installed at main entry and exit points and strategic locations across the construction site.
  • Beacon placement: Beacons are attached to vehicles, equipment, or objects requiring access control to facilitate automated detection.

Applications

  • Vehicle access management: Control access for construction vehicles across large job sites, ensuring only authorized vehicles enter or exit.
  • Heavy equipment tracking: Manage the movement of cranes, excavators, and other construction equipment within designated areas.
  • Site perimeter access: Secure the perimeter of construction sites to prevent unauthorized personnel or equipment from entering restricted areas.

Case Studies

  • Chicago, IL – A large urban construction project in Chicago utilized GAO RFID’s BLE access control system to regulate vehicle entry at multiple access points across a wide site. The BLE beacons offered long-range coverage, reducing the need for additional infrastructure.
  • Las Vegas, NV – A construction company in Las Vegas implemented BLE gateways at the entry points of its vast construction site, allowing efficient access control for large machinery. The rugged IP67-rated beacons performed well in dusty conditions.
  • Toronto, Canada – A Canadian construction firm adopted GAO RFID’s BLE access control solution for its multi-phase project in Toronto, ensuring seamless access management for vehicles across the site, even during harsh winter conditions.
